Wide receivers don’t seem like an overly happy population throughout the NFL these days. The Seahawks’ DK Metcalf apparently has joined that club.

In Thursday’s 36-24 loss to the 49ers, Metcalf appeared to provide choice words for offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. After Metcalf returned to the sidelines following a first-half series, he voiced his frustrations via headset. While Prime Video’s Kaylee Hartung delivered the cleaned-up version for the family audience, here’s the lip-reading translation from NFL Notifications.

“Hey, Grubb. Can we please … throw past the f**cking sticks? … PLEASE.”

Got it. Metcalf wanted the Seahawks to throw past the first-down marker, instead of short passes. At least he said please. And maybe Grubb accommodated the receiver’s polite request because Seattle nearly erased a 16-0 deficit, pulling to within one score in the fourth quarter.

But the 49ers (3-3) seized the day. And in the wake of the Seahawks’ third consecutive loss, Metcalf had just three catches for 48 yards, even though Geno Smith wound up targeting Metcalf 11 times. No wonder Metcalf slouched on the bench with a sour face midway through the second quarter.

Seattle (3-3) gets a mini-bye before visiting Atlanta on Oct. 20. It’s the Seahawks’ only road assignment over a five-game stretch. Seattle has four home games in that stretch, leading up to the NFL’s Nov. 5 trade deadline.

And even though Metcalf is off to the best start of his career, get ready for PhotoShop to put him in the uniforms of 31 other teams on fan social-media pages.
