New England might not be the only team to give a rookie quarterback his first NFL start this weekend. Derek Carr is reportedly out multiple weeks with a significant oblique strain and the Saints could start a rookie, too.

New Orleans (2-3) has two games over a five-game stretch starting Sunday at home against Tampa Bay (3-2). Fresh off a 23-16 loss at Kansas City on Monday, the Saints have just six days to prepare for the Bucs this week before hosting Denver (3-2) on Thursday, Oct. 17.

But according to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, rookie Spencer Rattler has entered the fray as a potential starter over Jake Haener.

“He impressed in the preseason,” Garafolo said on Tuesday’s edition of The Insiders.” I thought he was really composed, and so did the Saints as well. A strong candidate to be the guy that they’re going to tap.”

If they do tap Rattler, they’ll be confident those shoulders can handle the pressure. And if he does start, it’ll be the latest step in a tumultuous journey that led to the Saints selecting him in the fifth round of April’s draft.

Like the Saints prior to their Week 2 win at Dallas, the Buccaneers had to alter their schedule this week due to an approaching hurricane.

New Orleans jumped out to a strong start in winning its first two games but since has lost three straight.
