Officially, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority is responsible for the ownership and oversight of Allegiant Stadium. In reality, the Kansas City Chiefs own the 4-year-old facility. In Sunday’s 27-20 win over the Raiders, the Chiefs’ fans dominated the stadium at kickoff and Kansas City continued its road dominance of the Raiders.
On the heels of the Chiefs’ victory, improving the league’s only unblemished record to 7-0, consider these three mind-blowing notes from Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.
- Including the Super Bowl, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes (six) have more wins than any other coach-quarterback combination in Allegiant Stadium history, two more than Antonio Pierce–Aidan O’Connell, Josh McDaniels-Derek Carr and Jon Gruden-Derek Carr (each with four).
- Including the Super Bowl, the Chiefs have as many wins at the Las Vegas stadium in the past 350 days as the Raiders (three).
- Most wins by a head coach at Allegiant Stadium, including postseason: Andy Reid (six), Josh McDaniels (six), Antonio Pierce (five), Jon Gruden (four), Rich Bisaccia (three).
Kansas City’s defense owns the primary reason for the team’s success this year. The Chiefs have scored no more than 28 points in each of the 13 games during their current winning streak. Per Dubow, the Chiefs have the longest winning streak in NFL history when scoring 28-or-fewer points in each win, two more than the next-closest teams, the 1928-29 Green Bay Packers (11) and the 1927-28 New York Giants (1927-28).
In Sunday’s win over the Raiders (2-6), the Kansas City defense flipped the game 180 degrees by stonewalling Las Vegas on a critical sudden-change situation. With under six minutes in the third quarter and the Chiefs nursing a 21-17 lead, Mahomes threw an interception out of his own end zone. Tre’von Moehrig returned the pick 12 yards to give the Raiders first-and-goal at the Chiefs’ 3-yard line. But three straight Raiders runs netted zero yards and nose tackle Tershawn Wharton sacked Gardner Minshew on fourth down.
Mahomes, who was 27 of 38 for 262 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, made more NFL history. He connected with new wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, acquired in a trade earlier this week, to surpass 30,000 career passing yards and break Matthew Stafford’s NFL record for fastest to reach that mark. Mahomes now has 30,075 passing yards in 103 career games. Stafford needed 109 to reach the mark.
Travis Kelce also marked National Tight Ends Day by catching his first 2024 touchdown pass.
The Chiefs can extend their winning streak to 14 games, which would be the longest in franchise history, with a victory next week at home against Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football. Las Vegas has lost four straight entering their Week 9 assignment at Cincinnati.
