While many consider the Ravens one of the NFL’s best teams, especially after a convincing 41-10 victory against a respected Denver defense, Baltimore is only 6-3. They’ve lost a head-to-head tiebreaker by a toe to Kansas City and don’t even own the best record in their division, one-half game behind Pittsburgh (6-2) in the AFC North. That’s one reason they landed All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White on Tuesday.
Consider the context of where the Ravens stand entering Week 10. From 1990-2023, 167 NFL teams started 6-3. According to Elias Sports Bureau:
- 122 of those teams (73.1 percent) reached the playoffs;
- 32 (19.2 percent) played in their conference championship games;
- 13 (7.8 percent) earned Super Bowl berths;
- Six (3.6 percent) won the Super Bowl, most recently Tampa Bay in 2020.
The Ravens obviously looked at their areas of deficiency and wanted an extra edge to elevate their team into that 3.6 percent. After all, the Steelers made two moves on Tuesday to better their team.
Five years ago during a windy game, White intercepted the Ravens’ playsheet before the referee snatched it out of his hands. His ability to diagnose offenses might be another reason Baltimore acquired the All-Pro cornerback. Or, the Ravens might’ve just looked at their upcoming schedule.
Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson, Justin Herbert and Jameis Winston. All four quarterbacks have upcoming games against the Ravens. White, who has played against each passer, might wind up being the difference in one of those games. That alone seemed enough for Baltimore to go out and get White.
White probably won’t see extensive playing time during a short week for the Ravens, who host Burrow and the Bengals (4-5) on Thursday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET, Prime Video). But don’t be surprised this season when he makes at least one significant play to better Baltimore’s Super Bowl chances.
