The distance between Landover, Md., and Glendale, Ariz., is 2,322 miles. That’s where Mike Williams and Aaron Rodgers were, respectively, last Sunday. It’s also the general distance that separates their relationship, especially after the former Jets wide receiver went to Instagram on Monday night.
In last week’s 28-27 win at Washington, Williams caught a 32-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown pass – his first reception in a Steelers uniform after the team acquired him from the Jets. Meanwhile, at Arizona, Aaron Rodgers was struggling in a 31-6 loss to the Cardinals, the Jets’ sixth setback in their last seven games.
Five weeks ago after one of those narrow losses, 23-20 at home against the Bills, Rodgers blamed Williams for apparently running the wrong route next to Allen Lazard on a late-game interception.
“Two verticals. Allen’s down the seam, Mike’s down the red line,” said Rodgers after the Oct. 14 loss, referring to the line painted on NFL practice fields to help teach receivers how to run proper vertical routes. “So, I’m looking at Allen and he puts his hand up, three guys go with him and I’m throwing a no-look to the red line. When I just peaked my eyes back there, he’s running an in-breaker. So…it’s got to be down the red line.”
Williams obviously didn’t appreciate his quarterback throwing him under the bus, and on Monday night, the new Pittsburgh receiver threw Rodgers under shade.
Unfortunately, the Jets and Steelers aren’t scheduled to play each other this season. Pittsburgh (7-2) continues its hunt for the playoffs with a Sunday AFC North showdown against the Ravens (7-3) at Acrisure Stadium (1 p.m. ET, CBS). New York (3-7) is hoping to head into its bye week on a positive note with a win over the Colts (4-6) and former quarterback Joe Flacco at MetLife Stadium (1 p.m. ET, CBS).
