Justin Jefferson honored Randy Moss on Monday night after a touchdown reception. The Vikings receiver can honor the Hall of Famer again with 57 receiving yards this week.
When Minnesota (12-2) visits Seattle (8-6) on Sunday (4:05 p.m. ET, FOX), Jefferson could become the third player all-time to reach 1,300 yards in four of his first five NFL seasons. The only two players who’ve done that are Moss (with Minnesota) and Torry Holt (with the St. Louis Rams).
“I’m grateful for what he has done for this game,” Jefferson said after last week’s win, wearing a No. 84 Vikings jersey, “and what he has done for me as a kid. Just watching him and being a fan of him, I’ve always got to show love to him.”
Jefferson has also shown love to his teammates this season, selflessly trading opportunities for wins. And while he cares more about team victories than personal statistics, that doesn’t mean he’s happy that former LSU teammate Ja’Marr Chase is leading the league in receiving yards.
With three games left, Jefferson ranks second in the league with 1,243 receiving yards, 170 behind Chase (1,413). Jefferson believes “there’s still time” to catch Chase and there’s also still time for the Vikings (12-2) to catch Detroit (12-2) and Philadelphia (12-2).
The NFL handed the Vikings one of the league’s toughest three-game slates to close the regular season. After Sunday’s trip to Seattle, Minnesota hosts Green Bay (10-4) in Week 17 and closes with a trip to Detroit (12-2), which could serve as the NFL’s “Game 272” on the final Sunday night. Seattle quarterback Geno Smith is tracking to start against the Vikings despite a knee injury that prevented him from finishing in last week’s loss to the Packers.
Moss announced last Friday that surgeons had removed a cancerous mass from his bile duct following a procedure to place a stent in his liver. The Hall of Famer is on leave from his role as a Sunday NFL Countdown analyst in order to battle chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
