Nick Sirianni reportedly reached out to Zach Ertz to apologize for comments following the Commanders’ 36-33 win over the Eagles last week. Ertz might wind up having the last word.
That’s because even though Philadelphia has won 10 of its last 11, the Eagles (12-3) still haven’t clinched the NFC East. And in a nightmare scenario, Washington could still win the division. Sirianni and the Eagles can silence any noise by beating Dallas (7-8) and clinching the division on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, FOX).
But imagine the Commanders’ motivation should Philadelphia slip up against the Cowboys, potentially with Kenny Pickett or Tanner McKee at quarterback. Dallas has won four of its last five, including two in a row on the road.
Washington (10-5), which kicks off at home against Atlanta (8-7) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC), would still have no guarantees. The Commanders close the year in Dallas while the Eagles finish at home against the Giants (2-13). Then again, Washington had no guarantees when it lined up against Philadelphia last week.
The Falcons-Commanders game – the NFL’s first-ever primetime matchup between rookie starting quarterbacks selected in the first round — features No. 8 overall selection Michael Penix against No. 2 overall choice Jayden Daniels.
No NFC East team has won consecutive division titles since Philadelphia captured three straight from 2001-04. It’s the longest streak without a repeat division champion in NFL history. The Eagles can halt the streak with a win on Sunday against Dallas.
