In outstanding fashion, Jerry Jones told a dying fictional character in the smash hit Landman how he was able to purchase the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Now, 35 years later having moved on from Mike McCarthy, Jones is on the precipice of another enormous decision. All he’d need this time is a simple $8 million donation to the University of Colorado.
ESPN’s Mike Greenberg attempted to prepare the world for what lies in store should Deion Sanders become head coach of Jones’ Cowboys.
“I’ve sat right here every morning for the last 7½ years,” Greenberg said Tuesday on ESPN’s Get Up, “and had all of you tell me Jerry Jones likes it when Get Up is talking about his team. Well, there’s no better way to do that, there is no more performative move than to hire by far the most famous option to be your head coach … You will be the lead of everything, every single week, all of the time, and I think he likes it that way.”
Normally, a college coach speaking to an NFL team during the height of the recruiting season isn’t something coaches want in the social-media timelines of prospects. But Sanders is not a normal coach and the Cowboys are not a normal NFL team. Confirming his initial discussions with Jones on Monday night, Sanders stopped short of removing himself from Cowboys consideration.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders told Adam Schefter. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
He also might love Jones’ head-coach offer, considering Sanders’ two sons are leaving Boulder for the NFL and the university just ditched its NIL collective. And if there’s a way for Dallas to somehow land either of those sons, Shedeur or Shilo, even better.
It’s quite the contingency plan. Jones wasn’t in a hurry to decide McCarthy’s future after the regular season, having missed the NFL-mandated windows for initial interviews with hot candidates like Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo. Jones said earlier on Monday that he and McCarthy mutually agreed to move in different directions. Now, for just the ninth time in franchise history, the Cowboys are searching for new head coach.
Stay tuned, Earth. And if Dallas hires Sanders, Earth will continue to stay tuned to the best reality show in sports history.
