John Dorsey has helped Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell assemble a Super Bowl-caliber roster in Detroit. Now an important advisor in the Lions’ front office, Dorsey six years ago as general manager of the Cleveland Browns made the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.
Baker Mayfield.
Dorsey, who also was Kansas City general manager when the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes in , 2017departed Cleveland at the end of 2019. The Browns traded Mayfield to Carolina in 2022.
After four teams in 12 months, Mayfield seems to have found a permanent home in Tampa Bay – especially after throwing four touchdown passes in the Buccaneers’ 37-20 win over Washington Sunday. Browns fans, however, remain on an emotional amusement park ride without the amusement. Hindsight is most assuredly 20/20 for Cleveland supporters.
This week, Tampa Bay is at Detroit (1 p.m. ET, FOX) while the Browns visit Jacksonville (1 p.m. ET, CBS) on Sunday, meaning Mayfield and his old team might encounter each other in the skies this weekend. And like those flight plans, the franchises seem to be headed in different directions.
While the Buccaneers meet the Lions in a rematch of a thrilling NFC Divisional playoff, Cleveland has to prepare for the Jaguars with Myles Garrett on the injury report, question marks on its injury-riddled offensive line, and an ominous storm approaching with regard to starting quarterback Deshaun Watson.
“Clevelanders are happy for Baker Mayfield’s success and wish he was still here,” said one long-suffering Browns fan, asked to describe the mood of Northeast Ohio. “We think he was mistreated by the Browns organization. We’re disgusted by Deshaun Watson and think he’s a problem in the locker room, no longer the player he’s been. Jameis Winston looks like a choir boy next to Watson.”
