The Green Bay Packers might be a step ahead of other NFL teams that have Ryan Tannehill on speed dial.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports Sunday morning that the Packers have been in touch with the veteran quarterback, although nothing is official. Tannehill had told Russini several weeks ago that before he signed, it would have to be the right situation.
Green Bay certainly seems like the right situation. After Jordan Love sustained a reported sprained MCL in the waning seconds of Friday night’s loss, the Packers may have looked at their most important position and deemed Tannehill to be a better option.
Tannehill, initially selected by Miami with the 12th overall selection in the 2012 draft, earned Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2019. That year, his first in Tennessee, he led the Titans to an improbable berth in the AFC Championship at Kansas City. The Titans allowed his contract to expire in March and he’s been waiting for that right situation.
Ironically, as Kevin Clark noted Sunday, Aaron Rodgers when learning Matt LaFleur’s offense transplanted from Kyle Shanahan in 2019 was blown away by Tannehill’s ability to hit blind throws.
Tannehill also worked closely with now-Green Bay quarterback Malik Willis over the past two seasons in Tennessee.
