Jared Goff and the Lions’ offense have been selling tickets but if defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is going to lead Detroit to a championship, many in league circles believe they need to make a trade-deadline move to replace Aidan Hutchinson. And only a week before the NFL’s Nov. 5 trade deadline, a former general manager answered quickly when asked what he would do if he was calling shots in Detroit.
“This is easy. It’s Myles Garrett,” said Mike Tannenbaum, an ESPN2 guest of Kevin Clark on Tuesday’s This is Football. “I’m Brad Holmes, I’m calling up Cleveland and saying, ‘Listen, we are not negotiating; Myles Garrett is a Detroit Lion. Here it is, just fill in the paperwork and let me know.”
The Browns would demand a treasure trove of draft capital from Holmes, the Lions’ general manager. But Tannenbaum said acquiring Garrett would give the Lions (6-1) more than just a Hutchinson replacement in 2024. Hutchinson, who broke his leg at Dallas Oct. 13 and reportedly might return should Detroit make the Super Bowl, is a huge loss but whether he returns in February or next season, he will return.
“Look, does it matter if it’s two or three ones?” Tannenbaum asked, referring to future first-round draft choices. “If I’m Detroit, Aidan Hutchinson, I know what they said, but let’s assume he’s not coming back. Imagine Aidan Hutchinson and Myles Garrett in 2025. To me, his outcome determined them legitimately having a chance to win the Super Bowl this year, so that price to me isn’t too high. I would do everything I could if I was Detroit to try to pry Myles Garrett from them.”
Green Bay (6-2) will do everything it can to halt the Lions’ five-game winning streak on Sunday at Lambeau Field (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX). Goff is riding one of the most efficient streaks by a passer in league history, combining for 13 incompletions and 10 touchdown passes over his last four starts. A win over the Lions (6-1) would give the Packers at least a share of first place in the league’s best division.
Quarterback Jordan Love has a strained groin, an injury that prevented him from finishing last week’s win at Jacksonville, but MRI results Monday were favorable. He’ll enter the week day-to-day and could still play against Detroit.
