The Texans opened the season 5-1 but have since lost three of their last four. On Sunday night against the Lions, Houston became the first team in the league-merger era to lose a game after leading by 15 points and intercepting five passes.
And as Houston (6-4) prepares for an in-state trip to Dallas (3-6) for Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC), Texans players have had enough. According to Paul Gallant of ESPN 97.5, Houston has held two players-only meetings and could possibly have a third.
Future Hall of Famer J.J. Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year during his time with the Texans, had some honest thoughts on that report. Speaking to Pat McAfee on Wednesday afternoon, Watt said he hoped Houston’s meetings were different because the Texans are still considered a Super Bowl contender, but took viewers through the typical players-only meeting with an NFL team. The agenda usually follows four phases, Watt said.
Phase 1: “There’s one guy up there that’s like, ‘Hey guys, I’m going to take control of this; we’re going to get this under control right away,’” Watt said Wednesday on the Pat McAfee Show. “And there’s a lot of people in the room rolling their eyes, laying back in their seats, kind of waiting.
Phase 2: “And then there’s definitely one guy speaking that should not be speaking in front of the team ever, for sure, for sure. And he’s going to try and rally the troops and really give his go of it, what he’s seen from the sidelines, that he thinks the team needs to work on. And that guy’s always a (expletive) idiot.
Phase 3: “And then somebody tries to bring it back around, ‘Alright, so what we’re going to take away from this is that we all need to come in a little earlier, we all need to stay a little later, we all really need to give it a good go this week.’ As the Jets say, ‘Three good weeks of practice; we need that,’ … ‘And then we’re going to be good.’
Phase 4: “It ends and then everybody leaves and immediately starts talking to their close clique of friends. ‘This was (expletive) dumb. Can you believe What’s His Nuts got up there and said that? He played one snap, one time. And he thinks he can tell us how to play?’”
