Travis Kelce has had some decent seats to top-of-the-line entertainment over the past 12 months or so. Last week in Kansas City’s 16-14 win over the Broncos, he had a sideline view of the Bo Nix Rookie Tour. Here’s the uncensored version of Kelce’s critique of the Nix show, per …
Here’s the clean version of Kelce’s assessment on this week’s New Heights podcast: Nix is good at football. And while the Broncos weren’t able to beat the Chiefs last week, Nix went into a hostile Arrowhead environment and had Denver (5-5) in position to win. And entering Week 11, when the Broncos host Atlanta (6-4) on Sunday (4:05 p.m. ET, FOX), Nix led NFL rookies with 10 touchdown passes. More importantly, he’s improved week after week.
This week’s an interesting test for the 24-year-old Nix, who’s 3-1 against NFC opponents. The Falcons have the worst pass rush in the NFL, last in the league with sacks on just 2.62 percent of opponent pass attempts. Atlanta’s also susceptible to something in which Nix excels, scrambling. The quarterback ranks fifth among all NFL players with a 4.8 yards-per-carry average, with 290 yards and four touchdowns on 61 carries. The Falcons have allowed 248 yards on quarterback scrambles, third-worst in the league behind the Giants and Jaguars.
But Atlanta knows Nix, and so does the rest of the league. Asked Friday whether preparing for Nix is difficult considering the rookie’s played just 10 NFL games, Jessie Bates stated the obvious. After all, Nix played 61 college games over five years and threw nearly 2,000 passes.
“Ten games, that’s enough film to really see a quarterback’s strengths and weaknesses, what they like to do,” Bates said. “It’s not multiple years where we go back and watch what he does. But sometimes, that’s a good thing, so we’re not overthinking what this quarterback is capable of.
“We’ve been watching him in college for five, six years, however long it was – 10 years? He’s not a rookie quarterback. He’s a graduate student, almost.”
