It’s been nine years since the Broncos played a postseason game, their Super Bowl 50 victory over Carolina. During that drought, they never had a quarterback like Bo Nix. On Sunday, the Denver rookie led his club to a 38-0 win over the Chiefs, clinched AFC’s seventh and final playoff berth and made one final stab at the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

His competition for that award, Washington’s Jayden Daniels, has given the NFL an incredible future. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last time multiple rookie quarterbacks started at least four regular-season games and playoff contests was 2012 (Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson).

Here’s a closer look at Nix’s Offensive Rookie of the Year résumé:

  • Nix on Sunday finished 26 of 29 (89.7 percent) for 321 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, a 152.4 passer rating. He also rushed for 47 yards to spark the Broncos to a 10-7 record.
  • His 89.7 completion percentage against the Chiefs is the highest single-game completion percentage by a rookie quarterback with a minimum of 25 pass attempts in NFL history, surpassing Dak Prescott (88.9 percent, 32 of 36, Dec. 18, 2016, with Dallas).
  • Nix became the first rookie all-time with multiple games of at least 300 passing yards, four touchdown passes and a passer rating of 140-or-better.
  • Nix began the Kansas City game perfect on each of his first 18 pass attempts, the most consecutive completions to open a game by a rookie since at least 1978.
  • The 24-year-old quarterback threw 29 touchdown passes this season and surpassed Baker Mayfield (28 in 2018 with Cleveland) for the second most by a rookie quarterback in NFL annals. Only Justin Herbert (31 in 2020 with the Chargers) had more.
  • Nix had 10 games with two-or-more touchdown passes and joined Herbert (2020 with the Chargers) as the only rookies with 10 such games in league history.
  • No other rookie quarterback has ever authored seven games with multiple touchdown passes and no interceptions.
  • Nix registered five games with at least three touchdown passes, joining Herbert (six in 2020) as the only rookies with five such games in NFL annals.

Kansas City, meanwhile, shrugs off the 38-0 loss – the second-largest margin of defeat in Andy Reid’s Hall of Fame career. With Patrick Mahomes and most of the team’s starters resting on Sunday, Kansas City’s key players will have gone at least 23 days between games by the time the Chiefs (15-2) host the lowest-remaining seed in the Divisional Round of the playoffs on Jan. 18 or 19.
