Jerry Jones is reportedly ghosting the Chicago Bears, who’d like to speak to Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Considering that Jones just made a fantastic cameo with Billy Bob Thornton in Landman, a little patience might be in order. After all, Jones still has a full week to exclusively negotiate a new contract with McCarthy and his staff.

While Jacksonville’s decision to retain general manager Trent Baalke might dissuade some head-coach candidates who prefer a clean-slate alignment with the front office, don’t put Dallas in the same category. Even though Jones has served as owner and general manager since he paid $140 million to purchase the team in 1989, Dallas is a prime destination for head coaches.

“So many people have been able to have some success there in Dallas; you become a big deal,” Ari Meirov from the 33rd Team said on Monday’s NFL Spotlight podcast. “So, whoever it is, I think they would be interested in Dallas just because of that, and the opportunities that could happen with it in the future.”

Future and present, considering the team has probably the best quarterback among teams looking or potentially looking for head coaches in Dak Prescott. The Cowboys also have CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.

“It’s a roster where you can compete right away if you believe you’re a good coach,” Meirov said. “And Jerry, by the way, he does get involved in a lot of stuff. When it comes to roster decisions, is he in the conversation, yes. But they have Will McClay who’s involved, they have Stephen Jones who’s involved, and they also involve the head coach as well. It’s a collaborative effort there.

“I think there will be many coaches who will be interested in this Dallas situation, should it open up again. We don’t know if it will. We should know later on in the week where the wind is blowing.”

If the wind is blowing in the direction of a new contract for McCarthy, Cowboys players would seem to favor that decision.
