After a spooky and peculiar weekend to end the NFL preseason in Dallas, Jerry Jones, quarterback Trey Lance and the rest of Cowboys Nation have to wonder whether Saturday afternoon was a dream.
As Frank Schwab from Yahoo! Sports wrote, passing for 323 yards with five interceptions while rushing for 90 more is extremely difficult. Yet Lance pulled it off. Schwab added that Lance just can’t throw five interceptions in any game, including the preseason.
Jones and head coach Mike McCarthy obviously will take Lance to Cleveland when the Cowboys open 2024 against the Browns Sept. 8. Lance, the third overall selection in the 2021 draft, came to Dallas from San Francisco exactly a year ago for a fourth-round choice in 2024. This spring, Dallas declined Lance’s fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
It’s the latest twist overarching the confounding, divergent paths taken by Lance and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, the last overall selection in the 2022 draft.
Lance’s performance against the Chargers Sunday came less than 24 hours after Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert and several members of the team were trapped in their Dallas hotel elevator.
