Let these two facts sink in for a second: The Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield has won Offensive Player of the Week honors for three NFL franchises over his seven-year career, and the Bills’ Josh Allen – drafted six selections after Mayfield in 2018 – has won the award 15 times, more than any NFL player since they entered the league. Mayfield and Allen earned the respective NFC and AFC awards, the league announced Wednesday.
Tampa Bay didn’t punt in last week’s 40-17 road win over the Chargers, generating points on nine of 12 drives. Mayfield hit 22 of 27 attempts (81.5 percent) for 288 yards and four touchdowns with a 135.3 passer rating.
The quarterback has now won five career weekly awards, two with the Bucs, one with the Rams and two with the Browns, who drafted him No. 1 overall in 2018. He returns to his home state this week when Tampa Bay (8-6) visits Dallas (6-8) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC). Mayfield grew up three hours from AT&T Stadium.
In the Bills’ resounding 48-42 win at Detroit last week, Allen finished 23 of 34 (67.6 percent) for 362 yards and two touchdowns with a 122.4 rating. He also added 68 yards and two touchdowns to become the second player all-time with to reach 350 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns in a game. Only Russell Wilson (Sept. 22, 2019, with Seattle) had previously hit each of those marks in a game.
With 15 career weekly awards, Allen now has three seasons with three-or-more honors. That’s the fourth most by a quarterback in league annals, behind Tom Brady (five such seasons), Drew Brees (four) and Peyton Manning (four).
Buffalo (11-3) hosts New England (3-11) on Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS).
