In six years when the Commanders move into a new stadium on the site of the old RFK facility, Jayden Daniels should get his name on the building-dedication plaque. After all, in eight months, the rookie has transformed an entire metropolitan region and reversed the trajectory of a franchise. And in Sunday night’s 30-24 overtime win over Atlanta, he returned Washington to the playoffs.
But here’s the most mind-blowing accomplishment of Daniels’ mind-blowing rookie season: On five occasions now over his first 16 NFL games, he’s completed a touchdown pass in the final 30 seconds. No other player – rookie or veteran – has reached that number in a century-plus of NFL games.
Beginning with the Daniels Miracle Victory (DMV), the Hail Mary to beat Chicago Oct. 27, here are those five plays. And while Daniels could add to this list now that he officially has postseason reservations, don’t take him for granted.
- Oct. 27, Washington 18, Chicago 15: The Daniels Miracle Victory, a 52-yard Hail Mary deflection from Tyrique Stevenson to Noah Brown with no time remaining.
- Nov. 14, Philadelphia 26, Washington 18: Daniels finds Ertz on a 5-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left. Daniels then hits Ertz again on the two-point conversion to cut the Eagles’ lead to one possession but former Washington receiver Jahan Dotson recovers the onside kick.
- Nov. 24, Dallas 34, Washington 26: Trailing 27-20, Daniels completes 86-yard touchdown to Terry McLaurin with 21 seconds left, but ensuing extra-point attempt fails. Seconds later, Cowboys return kickoff for 43-yard touchdown.
- Dec. 22, Washington 36, Philadelphia 33: Daniels completes 9-yard touchdown to Jamison Crowder with six seconds remaining.
- Dec. 29, Washington 30, Atlanta 24: Daniels completes game-ending, 2-yard touchdown pass to Ertz with 2:42 left in overtime.
Daniels also reached 864 rushing yards on the season Sunday night to break the single-season NFL record held by former Washington star Robert Griffin III. Prior to Sunday, Griffin had held the most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback, 815 in 2012.
